Structural integrity
The Spirit of Dana Point
Dana Point, California
Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it. ~ Proverbs 4:23
Two years ago Pilgrim sank at dock in Dana Point Harbor. Pilgrim was a replica of the brig Richard Dana sailed from Massachusetts to California in the early 19th century. The ship keeled over and sank for no apparent reason. Officials reported that the ship had regular maintenance.
Is it possible that an undetected leak beneath the surface compromised the ship's structural integrity? I don't know. Yet, something happened to Pilgrim.
This causes me to reflect on the "structural integrity" of my heart. Proverbs 4:23 instructs to "guard your heart." Here are a few thoughts on how to guard your heart.
- Be in community. Do not go it alone. Hebrews 10:24 says that we should "stir up one another to love and good works."
- Understand your position in Christ. Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God."
- Have clear priorities. Matthew 6:33 "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness."
- Develop a daily purpose statement, such as: "Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got!" ~Deuteronomy 6:5 (The Message)
